Rivalry Week – May 27-30, 2013

Rivalry Week

Interleague Matchups – Rivalry week isn’t just about traditional cross-state rivals like the Cards-Royals, Reds-Indians, or fights between regional fan bases like Giants-Athletics, or  Orioles-Nationals.  They aren’t even all battles between two teams sharing a city like the Yankees-Mets, Dodgers-Angels, Cubs-White Sox.  Some don’t even have forced monikers for their rivalries, like the Subway Series, the Freeway Series, or the Citrus Series (Marlins-Rays).    Only one features former division foes, Twins-Brewers.

That doesn’t mean the rest of the series aren’t worthy of watching, or don’t have something of value at stake.  In 2013, many other rivalries will begin a new chapter:

Pirates-Tigers:  “The Battle for Jim Leyland’s Soul”

Rockies-Astros:  “The Battle Between Two Teams Which Are Clearly Expansion Teams, Wait What’s That, Really? Since When? Wow.

Phillies-Red Sox:  Two teamslargely defined by their fan bases in “The Clash of the Brash”, because I couldn’t find a word that rhymed with ‘obnoxious’.

Braves-Blue Jays: This is just an abomination, if any city gets to represent America against Canada, it should be Denver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOR38552MJA

Rangers-Diamondbacks:  Rafael Palmiero, Juan Gonzalez, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Williams, Troy Glaus… the neutral site for this matchup will be Gold’s Gym.

Padres-Mariners:  Both of these cities had successful Pacific Coast League teams displaced in favor of Major League in 1969.  Interesting fact:  since their disbanding, both minor league teams have won just as many world series as the Padres and Mariners.
